8-month-old infants' ability to process word order is shaped by the amount of exposure

چکیده

In the majority of languages, functional distinction between functors and content words correlates with lower-level, perceptually observable properties. Functors are generally more frequent prosodically minimal than words. Previous studies demonstrate that frequency distribution different acoustic realization infrequent guide infants in discovering their native word order. However, whether if yes, how exact ratio impacts infants' ability to recognize function relative order has never been explored. Here we investigate this by testing a small functors' words' frequency, 1:3 as opposed 1:9 previous studies, French 8-month-olds able establish functor-initial typical language (Experiment 1) prosody 2) amount exposure 3) modulate ability. We observed exhibited predicted preference only when they were exposed short familiarization phase, i.e. reduced exposure. This suggests amounts information selectively trigger processing mechanisms, little may favor extraction regularities.

Intuitive statistics by 8-month-old infants.

Human learners make inductive inferences based on small amounts of data: we generalize from samples to populations and vice versa. The academic discipline of statistics formalizes these intuitive statistical inferences. What is the origin of this ability? We report six experiments investigating whether 8-month-old infants are "intuitive statisticians." Our results showed that, given a sample, t...

Computation of Conditional Probability Statistics by 8 - Month - Old Infants

321 Abstract— A recent report demonstrated that 8-month-olds can segment a continuous stream of speech syllables, containing no acoustic or prosodic cues to word boundaries, into wordlike units after only 2 min of listening experience (Saffran, Aslin, & Newport, 1996). Thus, a powerful learning mechanism capable of extracting statistical information from fluent speech is available early in deve...

Object segregation in 8-month-old infants.

Two experiments examined 8-month-old infants' use of configural and physical knowledge in segregating three-dimensional adjacent displays. The infants in Experiment I saw two identical yellow octagons standing side by side: in the test events, a hand grasped the right octagon and pulled it to the side. The infants looked reliably longer when the octagons moved apart than when they moved togethe...
